Over the past year, this audiophile has been very fortunate to be able to review several pieces of equipment which are the epitome of “VALUE,” a word seldom heard in high end audio. Two of them were from Oppo; their BDP-83 and audiophile BDP-83SE universal disc players. Both do a super job in the playback of every 5-inch digital disc available, except for the extant HD-DVD. While they put out both audio and video superior to anything in their respective price ranges, there are several garage companies out there doing mods on them to try to improve on the factory models, and several high end companies, including Lexicon, are using the 83 as the base for their high cost players. Thus, there must be something great about the units.
